UK - Crewe Diesel Depot 24-11-85. Photo 1: A very poor sun bleached study of 08694 and 25189 at the back of Crewe Diesel Depot. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Crewe Diesel Depot 24-11-85. Photo 2: Looking the worst for wear 25058 at the north end of the Depot. Despite her condition she lasted well into 1987. Strange, better examples were being scrapped at Swindon. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Tyseley Depot 24-11-85. Photo 2: Super bubble 55994 in the running shed at Tyseley Depot now sporting the new parcels livery of the mid 80s. Just under the 'not to be moved' sign lurking in the shadows can be seen two of our party logging the moment. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Crewe works 24-11-85. Photo 1: Got one out of order, back to the Works with 86003 under repair. This was my last but one first generation AC electric. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - We go o'er the border for the next trip, Glasgow & Edinborough December 8th 1985. Photo 1: 26024 stabled at Polmadie early morning. She's still with us today at The Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway. I think the shunter behind is 08712. Buy Print©Pete Dix |

UK - Next stop Eastfield Depot in the snow.Photo 2: Ethel 3, 97252 (25314). One of three class 25s converted to train heating units for the far north/west of Scotland lines. They would sit inside the train loco providing electric heat after the withdrawal of steam heat stock. Hence the class 37/4 electric heating conversion programme mentioned during the last tour at Crewe Works. I copped this loco being built as D7664 at Derby Works Open Day in August 1966. UK - Scotland 08/12/85. Photo 1: 26006 freshly painted in early Railfreight colours and looking very smart in the snow. Note the under frame pipe work picked out in white. The black window frames certainly enhanced this livery. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08/12/85. Photo 2: This was the main reason I did this trip, 27032 was my penultimate cop for the class and had been dumped at St Rollox Works following fire damage earlier in the year. She somehow survived until March 1987 before being cut up like so many other locos in the 80s at Thornton Junction by Vic Berry. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08/12/85. Photo 1: St Rollox was always a highlight of any Scottish trip with so many locos undergoing repairs. 26038 is one such example. Note the early style spotlight for use on the far north line. This was an Inverness loco at this time, see the stag's head on the bodyside. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08/12/85. Photo 2: 27045 stands in the adjacent bay minus it's front bogie. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08/12/85. Photo 1: Wall to wall class 26 & 27s under repair. Here's 26040 under heavy general overhaul. It will be allocated to Haymarket on it's release. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08/12/85. Photo 2: In the adjacent workshop could be found coaching stock and units. Driving trailer 75754 from unit 303044 receives attention. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08-12-85. Photo 1: Now the question to ask yourselves here is, will she ever run again? Rehang the engine bay doors, a quick lick of paint and nobody would ever know !! Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08-12-85. Photo 2: Another member of the scrap line this day was 27016, another fire damage victim, behind was 20027. The class 27 ended it's days at Vic Berry's Leicester yard and probably became another brick in that gentleman's famous wall. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08-12-85. It looks like 1987 was the year of the cull, so many locos stored around the country met their end in this particular year and most of what I've shown at St Rollox were no exception. Photo 1: Withdrawn in the summer of 82 time has taken it's toll on 08246 and somehow a drab and faded rail blue livery adds to the sorrow. She was cut by Messer D. Christie at Camlackie. UK - Scotland 08-12-85. Last couple at St Rollox. Photo 2: Both 20102 and 20171 were released back to traffic although 171 did return to MC Metals by the end of the 80s. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08-12-85. Last couple at St Rollox. Photo 1: 27027 heads 26033 & 26030, more for the grim reaper. All three were cut up at Thornton Junction in .......1987. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - Scotland 08-12-85. We move onto Grangemouth for a few shots, always an enjoyable and friendly depot to visit. Nice to see the recent renaissance with GBRF activity in the area. Photo 1: Full side on view of 20213 stabled outside the depot building. She lasted until October 1992 before being cut up at M.C. Metals. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
UK - We move onto Grangemouth for a few shots, always an enjoyable and friendly depot to visit. Nice to see the recent renaissance with GBRF activity in the area. Photo 2: 37099 on the fuel line. This loco was named Clydebridge the following year and was renumbered 37324 before reverting to 37099. Not sure where she is now, any offers? Buy PrintAccording to Ian Furness’ excellent End Of the Line site, www.wnxx.com 37099 was withdrawn in 6/97 and is preserved with a private owner. No location given though, maybe you had already looked there? Maybe its at the Great Central?-{MH737} 37099, now preserved by the Growler Group on the on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway at Toddington...The loco carries the number 37324 which it carried briefly in the mid -late 1980's -{Dave} ©Pete Dix |
UK - 37099. You're absolutely right Mark, she is preserved. I should have checked my photo records more carefully. Here are a couple of shots I took of her in 1998 on the North Norfolk Railway at Weybourne. If anyone is over that side of the country this private line is well worth a visit. Buy Print©Pete Dix |

UK - Scotland 08-12-85. Photo 1: 08196 was for so long a South Wales shunter sharing the 1960s allocated between Canton, Cardiff East Dock and Cardiff Cathays sheds but I still had to go to Scotland in 1983 to cop it at Grangemouth. Here she is in December 1985 at the same location with just a month to go. Buy Print©Pete Dix |
