UK South West 28-06-87. On 26-06-87 we spent a few hours in the withered arm (Cornwall) with the intention of clearing Lairas 13 Skipper units (142015 142027) which we did successfully. These were introduced for use on the Devon and Cornish branch lines but proved to be completely unsuitable. With their four wheeled chassis design on the tight curves they suffered from excessive tyre wear. It is said some locals couldnt tell the difference between an approaching 142 and the squawking seagulls flying overhead. A very poor quality flash photo shows 142017 on Laira Depot around midnight in its chocolate & cream livery. The hazy appearance of this shot is coastal mist which hung around all through the night and the following morning.
©Pete Dix
