With luck I was passing the Midland Mainline in Loughborough shortly before the Hastings DEMU tour passed by on its way back to Hastings, having been to the exotic destination of Nottingham. For those not so familiar with the Hastings DEMUs, they were built to a narrow loading gauge and as 6 car units. The Unit that survives is made up to two original power cars, two trailers and a normal MK1 buffet in the middle. As you can see the narrow width of the Hastings DEMU relative to the normal UK passenger loading gauge. The unit called at Loughborough at the same time as modern unit was due to depart. One advantage in the days gone by with the narrow width of the units they made ideal rail tour units as they could go almost anywhere on the freight lines not just passenger lines. I did the Hastings Diesel Swansong many years ago Charing X - Hastings then Weymouth Quay. At Charing Cross many people thought is a normal train to Hastings - they had stopped working on the route for a few years by then.
©Stephen Dee
