Manchester & Crewe 24-04-88. 47653 ‘Samson’ stands at Crewe Station with a Glasgow – Birmingham service. At this time she was an Eastfield loco but within the month she would be transferred back to Bath Road. Apparently both nameplates were stolen at different times. Replicas were ordered but never fitted.
©Pete Dix

Manchester & Crewe 24-04-88. I know what you’re going to say when you see this photo. Quoting from a famous film, 'We’re going to need a bigger…...….shed.' 08737 stands all on its own inside Stoke Cockshute depot. Apart from a couple of 310s outside that was our lot.
©Pete Dix

UK- Eurotunnel Class 37s at Didcot - 7 May 2007. An early start to the Bank Holiday for me to catch these rare locos working a charter train at Didcot. These class 37s were part of a batch of 12 locos refurbished for use as emergency locos and sleeper haulage through the Channel Tunnel between England and France. In the event the sleeper trains never started with the expensive purpose built coaches eventually despatched to Canada for use there - victims of price-cutting by the car ferry companies and the advent of low-cost airlines in the UK. Most of the 12 locos were sold off to DRS for use on their nuclear flask trains but three remain in use as rescue locos with Eurotunnel, including these two, 37603 and 37604 on a rare passenger working. As you can see, the recent lovely warm sunshine was replaced by dullness and drizzel this morning. Not a great combination with grey locos!
©David Campbell

Bristol May 1988. The next batch of photos was taken at Temple Meads over a couple of weekends around the time of the demise of class 33 haulage on the Cardiff to Portsmouth route. This being taken over by the erstwhile class 155 Super Sprinter. The photo shows 33028 arriving with a midday service up from Portsmouth. The Vauxhall garage in the background operating as Welch is still in business today but now part of the huge Arriva organisation. I tried in vain for the General Managers position there the following year 1989; glad I didn’t get it, it’s a nightmare commuting into Bristol these days even by train.
©Pete Dix
