Bristol 19-08-89. I’ve been rushing through these last few to get to this photo but the quality of light spoils it. However, you can’t se it these days. For a couple of years there was a service that ran on summer Saturdays from Manchester to Paignton and it was always hauled by a pair of 31s with Mk3 stock. Does anybody remember this service or has better photos to share? I can’t even tell you what the loco numbers were. .
©Pete Dix

Bristol 19-08-89. Yes, I remember that train well. Here's a picture from 9 May 1987 of the southbound train leaving Stonehouse, obviously going through the Stroud Valley via Swindon - I'm not sure if this was the usual route. Locos were 31465 and 31404. I'm also not sure if it was a MkIII set, looks like a couple of MkII first class coaches behind the locos, but it was certainly a West Coast Main Line set. In later years they even left the DVT on the train!
©David Campbell

Re: Bristol 19-08-89 (2). Another shot of the southbound working - this time only three weeks before Pete's shot, dated 29 July 1987 and definitely a MkIII set, though you can only see the first coach. The location is the disused station at Charfield, and the locos were 31406 and 31425.
©David Campbell

Re: [rail-photos] Bristol 19-08-89 (2). I too remember the Paignton-Manchester summer runnings with pairs of 31s. I remember too the withdrawl of the service in 1989. I got myself a ticket to Bristol and on 30th September 1989 I boarded the last ever running - hauled by 31445 in blue and 31455 in slate grey. 31455, new as D5674 in 1960 as Brush works no. 274 ended it's days at Wigan CRDC 02/2000. 31445, new as D5833 in 1962 as Brush works no. 369 ended its days at CF Booth, Rotherham 10/02. The photo is of another service leaving Taunton with 31422 leading 31460 taken 1st July 1989. 31422 new as D5844 in 1962 as Brush works no. 380 survives in preservation 31460 new as D5696 in 1961 as Brush works no. 297 ended its days at TJ Thomson, Stockon 01/07.
©Simon Jones

Hydraulics in Yorkshire. Apart from D9520 (still needed - and no more photos thanks) there was another Teddy Bear that I required for all time. D9513 (build 1964), or NCB: 38 as she is now, was rounded up last weekend after the Carnforth Open Day. Fresh from overhaul and looking smart in its Coal Board colours D9513 sits in one of the workshops at Embsay. It spent many years at the Ashington complex in Northumberland before being sold to this railway in 1987; I hope she’s returned to green one day. Mark, have you any photos of her time in the North East? I recommend a visit to this private line, they have a marvelous collection of old industrial steam locos and others undergoing overhaul in their workshops.
©Pete Dix

Exeter St Davids September 1989. Moving on a month to mid September 1989 we were off to Exmouth for two weeks holiday. I managed to sneak off on a couple of occasions to spend time at Exeter SD photographing 50s during their last few years on the Waterloo services. Most of the shots are at night. First up is Bubble 55005 standing at platform 1. The few remaining class 122 Gloucester bubbles were concentrated on Laira by this time.
©Pete Dix

Exeter St Davids September 1989. The beauty of watching these Waterloo to Exeter services at this time of night was that after arriving behind one Hoover another one would couple up on the other end and take the empty stock off to Laira. Sometimes there was a few us of lads watching events on the platform and the drivers of the ECS would give it some wellie leaving the station. 50027 waits for the road. how the world has changed, in those days if you were caught ‘bunking’ the foreman or who ever would just tell you to sod off. These days you’re likely to be psycho analised, finger printed, retina scanned and interrogated by the FBI – all at the same time. The trip I referred to in the previous posting was a particular favourite of mine; two of us caught a midnight train from Bristol to Manchester and got off at Crewe. We visited (that sounds better) Crewe Diesel Depot, Crewe Works and the remains of Crewe South Shed all before breakfast. We then boarded a train to Derby and did the same at Derby Shed and Works before lunch and finally travelled by bus to Sandiacre and did Toton before tea, all so easy. Getting back to Crewe Works my one abiding memory of that visit was of dozens of stray cats roaming the place, all workshops left unlocked and not a night watchman (remember them?) in sight. Ahhhh, halcyon days.
©Pete Dix

Stratford 1990. Further to Peter Dix's tales of 'bunking' Crewe - here is my incredibly fortunate photos of the exterior of Stratford Diesel Depot 08.06.1990. I was given a guided tour not only of the diesel depot but the electric depot as well - a place that was notorious for not issuing permits. 8 locos are seen in this shot, 3x 47s, 4x 31s and a 37 - they are (left to right) 47098, 47xxx, 47351, 2x 31s in far distance, 31116, 31180 behind inside the shed and 37216.
©Simon Jones

UK: Exeter St David's - What Goes about............Pete's recent photos, and a day trip in the rain last Saturday, have inspired me to produce this little comparison shot. The top photo is of nearly-new Pacer 142026 in pseudo-GWR chocolate and cream livery in platform 1 on 19 September 1987. The Pacers were introduced to the Devon and Cornwall branches as the saving graces of rural lines. Unfortunately the long, fixed wheelbase caused horrible squealing of the flanges on the tight curves, not least the steep curve up from Exeter St David's to Central Station and the Exmouth branch, just to the right of this shot. The Pacers were soon banished 'up North' to join their sisters at Newton Heath, Manchester. For 20 years Exeter was blissfully Pacer-free, but now the Devon branches are once again home to these noisy, horrible busses-dressed-up-as-trains. The lower photo, taken just last Saturday, shows 142063 and 142029 occupying the very same track and forming a service from ......Exmouth.
©David Campbell
