Here’s the other 31, 31320. Can anybody remind me what the yellow tape below the cab window signified? Look at the line of shunters, even by the late 1980s there was a serious decline in the work for these humble machines in the area. The area behind the shunters was where the four turntable steam shed was situated with the straight shed forming what was to become the diesel depot. I believe the round house had its own bypass line inside the building. The whole shed complex was of course surrounded by the Tyneside third rail system. The shed closed to steam in March 1965.
©Pete Dix

North East 29-08-88. A cockney sparrow at Tyne Yard. 37107 stables at the two road depot. The last time we visited this depot which was only about five or six years ago late one afternoon, we had gained permission from the office and were half way round the stabled locos when the foreman came running out of the office telling us we had to leave straight away. When I enquired about his change of heart he told us that some so called enthusiasts had been allowed round a few weeks earlier and had pinched all the fault logging books out of the cabs of the class 66s that were on depot. A directive from upon high had immediately banned any further visits; he had forgotten this order when giving us the go ahead. We were politely escorted off site.
©Pete Dix
